Trail
and Cabin Conditions
Are you
going for a walk, a hike, or a ride
on one of Sitka’s trails? You can
help protect and preserve area
trails and provide a safe, high
quality outdoor experience through
the Sitka Trail Watch program.
Trail Watch volunteers serve as the
“eyes and ears” of local agencies by
reporting
- bear sightings
- hazardous conditions
- maintenance needs
- illegal or suspicious
activity
- vandalism to trails or
cabins
- and other trail concerns,
photos, and cool stuff.
Trail Watchers can volunteer as
little or as much as they want but
are encouraged to submit reports
frequently. Volunteer reports are
posted by agency staff to the
Trail
and Cabin Conditions section of
this website.

The submission of photographs and
detailed information such as
blowdown crossing the trail, height
of tree across trail, approximate
diameter and any structures that may
have been impacted by fallen trees
or flooding is encouraged.
Volunteers should also note broken
boards or tread torn out by roots or
other examples of structural damage
and if they present a safety hazard.
Illegal or suspicious
activity
When out on a trail or visiting a
remote cabin site report
suspicious or criminal activity
immediately to the Sitka Police
Department. Trail Watch participants
should practice the following
guidelines.
- Keep an eye out for persons
or boats that appear out of
place or suspicious around
cabins
- Note other boats in the
area. Write down AK numbers and
boat descriptions that appear
out of place.
- Do not approach or confront
the individuals present at the
site; do not indicate that you
are suspicious of their
activities!
- Immediately leave the area
and watch for others in the area
- Be aware of your
surroundings at all times. In
some cases potentially dangerous
devices or harmful materials are
present.
- When you are safely away,
write down a detailed
description of the activities
taking place, the area, the
people, and any vehicles/boats.
- Trust your instincts. If
you feel uncomfortable in a
place or situation, leave right
away and get help if necessary.
- Avoid confrontation.
- Be respectful and use good
manners when interacting with
others.
- Carry a cell phone or radio
if coverage is available in the
area.
- Preserve but do not handle
any evidence of a crime.
